Strategize your calendar

The essence of this training journal is based off the legendary Samurai, Miyamoto Musashi’s epic manual on strategy, “The Book of Five Rings”. He wrote the manual towards the end of his life to summarize the elements of nature, air, water, fire and earth. There is a fifth element known as void but for practical purposes, this will be omitted from this journal.

The framework of strategizing your training is based on these elements and each is responsible for creating a complete martial artist than can grow in a positive way and manifest their bigger goals using smaller goals. Like in a battle, there are stages of development and corresponding strategy for the circumstances.

How it works

The elements, not only take into account physical attributes, but a larger framework of what makes a successful martial artist. If having a planner is new to you, the first 30 days are critical to establishing this to be pat of your daily routine. If you can make 1% progress everyday, by the end of the year you will have made a complete 360 transformation.

The elements all have an important role in our development on and off the mat.

  • When you physically write down your priorities; it gets done. Period.
  • Acknowledging what you learned and how it felt in a deeper way, hardwires all the information and effort to take ownership of it.
  • Keeps you inspired when you encounter rough patches on and off the mat.
  • By creating a ritual of scheduling what you prioritize, your responsibilities become more fun; as if you’re planning a vacation.
  • Daily hexagrams at the bottom of every day will give you a hint at the energy of the day.
